Very little of note

Started a few fights on fb. Always fun.

B ordered and/or bought all the Funko SDCC exclusive pops that she wanted so that's done too. One of the required a 90 minute drive each way but it was entertaining so I didn't mind. Not sure what she's going to do next year.

Went through my many small boxes of family photos looking for what stuff I have from one side of the family. End result? 11 boxes of photos of the paternal side, 1/2 a box from the maternal side. Thing is, until my generation both side of the family were at about the same socio-economic level. One of them was just way more into taking pictures than the other as far as I can tell. And it held true through mine and family vacations. We just didn't take pictures when we were with them in comparison to the dozens we did on the other side. It's so odd.

Saw a picture of my maternal grandmother as a young woman for the very first time this morning, sent to me digitally by a second cousin (I love the future). It's a little tough to tell from the photo but she can't be older than 30 in it which is much younger than the age 60ish photo I'd seen a long time ago. We apparently looked a lot alike and this photo does show that family resemblance rather strongly.

5 sleeps left.

Well, it was a day of unexpected things

1. Package that got stolen is still missing. Vendor says I should appeal to my bank for a refund. Doing that tomorrow.

2. Got off the phone with a distant cousin I've never talked to before. My sister did a 23andMe test and all the family tree folks are coming out of the (heh) woodwork because I have 20 years worth of my research up online and they wanna see it. It was lovely but unexpected.

3. Guy who hired me for the job in PHX is now not going to be my boss at all. He and another dude have switched positions (dictated from much further up the chain) so I'm walking into a job where I don't even know the dude I'm going to be working for. Yay? The team is apparently excited to meet me and get started so that's something.

6 nights left.

Tell me about the episode (or book chapter) that never appeared in one of your fandoms but should have.

SGA: More of Ronon's backstory. Yes, we got the fall of Sateda but I want to see what it looked like 10 years before that. They clearly had a rich culture. Basically I wanted more of the real Pegasus Galaxy. In fact, how about a season 2 that didn't immediately go back to Earth.

MCU: Captain America 3 - one that wasn't dominated by the faux ideology problems of Stark v. Rogers. Alternatively, how about a Black Widow heist movie? Or a Wasp movie set in the 70s.

Outlander: [No, can't do it. It would need for the source material to have something even remotely resembling real world economics and morality and the books just don't do that.]

All kinds of stuff gone

Sold off two gigantic boxes of books (yay). Got a box from Lands End stolen - it was downstairs when I left with my giant boxes of books but wasn't when I came back 45 minutes later. I live in a gated apartment building which means someone in the building took it. I've left a note but I don't have much hope I get my stuff.

Update: Lands End said to dispute it with my bank (which is already closed for the day). Ugh.

In fandom news can I say thank goodness S. Stan came out and said he was not in Black Panther? I swear I heard a chorus of angels fly out of tumblr. I mean, I like my Standard Issue White Dude as much as the next person but he doesn't need nor should he be in that movie. Defrost his flat butt six months later for Infinity War. I am so not into the casual racism that's only going to ramp up like crazy over the next year. Ugh.

Another day closer

No packing at all today.

Watched the Woman in Gold. Lovely film with Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Bruhl, Tatiana Maslany and a host of others. I'd read the article about the Klimt paintings and the movie about a year ago when the movie was getting ready to come out. It's a quiet piece that only dips into a chase sequence once (and that felt like something that the studio made them put in because it doesn't match the rest of the film at all??). Helen was Helen and I was quite pleasantly surprised by Ryan Reynolds. I think because we see him so often in over the top stuff its easy to forget there is a quite talented actor in there.

I'm enjoying the quiet while I've got it and enjoying the companionship of my cats while I can still live with them.

Got rid of some stuff (put it on the curb, gone in less than 10 minutes). Went shopping on 4th Street which has a lot of small local shops. I only got stuff from the local stationary/calligraphy store but I did get some pizza from Bette's Oceanview Diner and looked around in the two really beautiful Japanese stores. I was tempted by some of their stuff but I don't know what the new apartment really is going to be like yet so I'm holding off. Ducked into Sur Le Table for a hot second - only thing I know I need for the new kitchen they don't have. So overall it was really good for my wallet as well as what I can take with me to Phoenix.

Watched Moana for the first time. Lovely animation. Found myself skipping through bits of it and I'd already seen, thanks to Tumblr the big moment. It was moving? It's just that the beats were so predictable that I knew exactly how much I could skip forward on Netflix and still hit them.

In the midst of re-watching The West Wing except I've hit season 4 and it kinda goes to crap there. Debating switching over to due South. Been a long time since that one.

It's funny what moving does to you and what you are suddenly willing to let go of. Today I tore up some carpet and put down tile where the litter box sits (old cats, ahem). It looks good and hopefully will be easier for B to maintain than the carpet was.

Another few boxes packed and I'm debating what can wait for my second car trip now and what needs to come with me. Blah.

I feel incredibly mixed about this move. Yes, the job looks to be awesome. I know a person in town. The money, frankly, looks to be amazing. And I'm having a case of the 'I don't wannas'. I've been wanting to leave Berkeley and haven't found a decent job here but it still doesn't feel like I had a choice in the matter. And B and the cats are staying here. It's like the world's most awkward divorce/family breakup.

I go through days being okay and then it hits again. It's not helped by the fact that moving here was traumatic and moving to Seattle wasn't really by choice either. Monkey brain ain't so happy.

Another box packed. Got chocolate mini-donuts in lieu of cake for something sweet for my birthday. Got rid of a few more things. It'll be better when I'm moved, right?

It's my birthday and minus one pretty bad mood dip around dinner time it's been nice. A friend of mine is going to be able to take a day off and do the drive to Phoenix with me and help me unload my tiny truckload of stuff. That'll be nice. Other than that I mostly spent the day looking at prime deals I didn't buy and doing aspirational window shopping.

How's your Tuesday going?

Today's update

Got confirmation I was accepted for the apartment. Woot. That was my big worry and was driving my start date. Now that is settled I've started all the ridiculous things one does with a new residence (insurance, internet connection, power company hookup). I also went out to the outlet mall and picked up some business casual clothing since my wardrobe is either jeans and t-shirts or gala gowns and a thin slice of business casual in the middle after 8 years of working in non-profit theater and high end events. So it turns out that this time of year Ralph Lauren has their stuff on deep clearance I once again own several cardigans, no-iron dress shirts and some knit tops. Tis ridiculous, but there you go.

Got some new food bowls for the cats that eat to fast that have curves in them so they are forced to slow down. We'll see if it works. Also picked up some soft fleecy beds that have a thermal blanket reflector thing-a-bob in them for the two old ladies who have slowed way down in the last year.

I didn't pack any new boxes yesterday but I did go through a couple of existing ones of craft stuff. I have now refreshed my memory and those will be going with me to Phoenix at a later date. I'm toying with the idea of flying back in mid to late August and driving back in a rented vehicle full of Stuff. I know I'll definitely be doing that in February when PantheaCon rolls around.

Moments of excitement are bubbling through the existential dread of a new job in a new city. It's novel after the utter flatline of the last three weeks where I wasn't sure it was going to happen. Nota bene: I heard about the job in early March, applied in early April when it opened, interviewed the first time in May, again in early June, got the prelim offer June 19, started the background check paperwork on June 22 and got confirmation on July 8 that I passed the background check and drug screening. Tomorrow I get to tell them my start date which I anticipate being July 31.

Existential dread of a five month hiring process is tiring on the brain meats. I've been taking surprise naps since Friday afternoon when I knew for sure there were no more hoops or barriers to the job.

Next steps

Officially passed all the screening. I pick my start date (dependent upon an apartment at this point) and then I'm off to Phoenix, most likely in the next 2 ish weeks. I've applied for a place and they are running my credit check right now. Ugh.

B and I are having low-key custody wars over the cats. It's ugly, in only the way family can be.

As always seems to happen when I'm about to move away from a place (even if I don't know it's happening yet) I start really engaging with the local landscape and people. I've seen more of California in the last year that I did in the previous 13.

In moving news I think 95% of my stuff will fit into about twenty boxes, two suitcases and 5 plastic bins. My friends are somewhere between impressed and appalled. I seem to have lost any interest in owning things?
